Cornell Quarterly Report
- May, 2001
The Cornell Quarterly just released an insightful report on the state of the bed & breakfast industry, entitled How Big is Small, written by Pamela Lanier, author of The Complete Guide to Bed & Breakfasts, Inns and Guesthouses, and Lodging Resources Workshops. The study, based upon detailed information provided by 5,650 members of The Guide, revealed some amazing facts on this booming industry:
- With an ADR of $122 per night, this segment of the industry grosses nearly $3.5 billion annually.
- Almost 31% of all US lodging properties are in the B&B, country inn, and small hotel sector.
- Growth potential exists nationwide and worldwide to develop new inns. Areas of most and least penetration are detailed in the study.
Innkeeping is the #1 dream profession of many in the corporate world. In addition to buying or developing an inn, business opportunities may be found in peripheral areas such as real-time online reservation systems, business and marketing consulting, and in the formation of partnerships to leverage several inns in a given geographic area with technologically-enabled business practices.
